David Farrow Fiction Wiki

The Chronicler is an omniscient and near-omnipotent being (similar to the Creator of All Things) who occupies a pocket dimension that looks like a library study. Like the Inspector, they are fascinated with humans and their stories, but unlike the Inspector, they actively meddle in human affairs. Their reality warping abilities allow them to “rewrite” events as they choose in an attempt to create the perfect story.

Overview[]

Murder Mystery[]

  • The Chronicler becomes fond of Mark and Ruth Hannigan and tries to write them a happy ending, but is alarmed to discover that any attempt to save them results in one of them dying anyway. They ultimately decide to stop trying when Ruth confronts them in their library, but give Ruth some peace by erasing her memories and allowing her to spend one last night with Mark, not knowing his fate.

Silver Screen[]

  • The Chronicler is revealed to have rewritten events to bolster Steve Hannigan’s filmmaking career, in order for his stories to reach more people. Steve is grateful, but afraid that without a push from the Chronicler, he’ll never be able to recapture the magic of his early career. The Chronicler assures him that the initial push was all he needed – he’s never stopped moving since then.

Can You Hear Me?[]

  • The Chronicler creates a beta universe that reenacts the events of The Neverglades: Volume One, but gives Mark Hannigan agency to see if he can defy his fate. Mark becomes aware of his existence as a character in a story, but is unable to break the fourth wall and escape from the narrative.

Blood Moon[]

  • The Chronicler takes pity on Meta Mark and offers to save him, in exchange for carrying out an important task: collecting a team of the strongest entities he can find across the multiverse to stop the Sightless before he can destroy all life in all dimensions. They had recognized the dark entity’s destructive nature before and tried to cripple it by removing its eyes, but this only heightened its rage and thirst for revenge. After the battle, the Chronicler lets Meta Mark use the books in their library to explore the multiverse, granting him freedom at last.

Powers and Limitations[]

  • They can rewrite reality and change how events occur, but they cannot change the fundamental nature or personality of the characters involved.
  • They exist in every universe simultaneously and are capable of perceiving all realities in the multiverse at once. They can also project their voice to the people who live in those realities.
  • They can understand the thoughts and feelings of everyone in the multiverse, but lack the ability to empathize on a human level.
  • They can summon people to their library and return them home, but require external tools (like the Sightless’s eyes or the Creator’s books) to transport people across dimensions.
  • They cannot erase matter from existence, as it will always rematerialize in the library when removed from its reality.
  • They cannot perceive the Dark, the realm outside the multiverse where the Other resides.
